Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Castaic Owner’s Guide

Elite keypad and intercom repair in Castaic typically runs between $285 and $540 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad itself, the intercom module, or both. Our trucks carry Elite-compatible keypads and intercom boards for most SL3000 and SL1000 series openers, so most repairs are finished in one visit. The usual discovery goes like this: the gate worked fine for years, then one morning the keypad lights up but won’t send, or the intercom speaker crackles and dies halfway through a conversation with a delivery driver.

We’re an independent gate service company, not affiliated with Elite, which matters for one simple reason: we stock broad compatibility across Elite’s lineup and we’re not tied to any single distributor’s inventory delays. If you’ve got a dead keypad on the post and a guest at the bottom of the driveway, you don’t want to hear about a three-week backorder.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite gate openers split into two main families that account for nearly everything we see in Castaic: the SL3000 series, which is the heavy-duty slide gate workhorse on ranch properties and long driveways off Lake Hughes Road, and the SL1000 line, more common on swing gates in the Hasley Canyon and Hillcrest Park areas. Both use Elite’s proprietary keypad and intercom connectors, and here’s the gotcha most owners don’t know: the four-pin connector on an SL3000 keypad looks identical to the one on the SL1000, but the wiring order is different. Match the wrong one and the keypad won’t respond, or worse, it can pull voltage through the wrong leg of the board and take out the intercom module alongside it.

When we roll out to a Castaic repair, our technician checks two things before touching anything: the model tag on the opener itself, and the FCC label on the back of the dead keypad. If you’ve got the original paperwork, even better. As for OEM versus aftermarket, here’s our honest take from 42 years of doing this: Elite OEM keypads are fine and we stock them, but for the intercom phone modules, we often recommend a quality aftermarket replacement that uses the same housing footprint and performs identically. The original intercom phone modules from Elite were never especially weather-hardy, and aftermarket units with potted circuit boards hold up better against Castaic’s summer heat and the Santa Ana season’s fine dust. The part that fails first is almost always the intercom speaker element, not the keypad membrane.

Signs Your Elite Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. The membrane switches themselves rarely fail; what usually dies is the relay driver on the inside of the keypad housing. The display powers on because it’s on a separate circuit, so the panel looks alive while the output leg is dead.
  • Intercom audio works in one direction only. If you can hear the visitor but they can’t hear you, the microphone capsule is gone, which happens faster on post-mounted units that face full afternoon sun along Ridge Route Road. If they can hear you but you can’t hear them, it’s the speaker element or the amplifier stage.
  • Keypad works but takes three or four tries. This is usually corroded contacts between the rubber keypad cover and the PCB underneath, accelerated by Castaic’s wild temperature swings. At 40 degrees overnight and 90 by noon, condensation forms inside the housing and works its way into the contact grid.
  • Intercom buzzes or hums constantly. That’s a failing capacitor in the audio circuit, and it’s a repair we can sometimes do on the board itself rather than replacing the whole unit. But if it’s been buzzing for months, the capacitor has likely leaked and damaged the board trace.
  • Gate opens on its own at random. This one rattles people, and it’s almost always a water-damaged keypad membrane creating false contact closures. The fix is a new keypad housing with a better gasket, not a new opener, but it’s worth calling us sooner than later.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the straight breakdown for Castaic Elite keypad and intercom work:

  • Keypad replacement (standalone): $285-$360 installed
  • Intercom module replacement: $340-$430 installed
  • Full keypad + intercom replacement: $460-$540 installed
  • Board-level repair (when possible): $180-$260 plus parts

The range comes down to part availability at the time of the call and whether the housing needs to be remounted or rewired. Every price we quote is settled before any work begins, and it includes the labor, the part, the wiring if needed, and a walkthrough of the new unit before we leave. The entire repair is covered by our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad or intercom misbehaves within 90 days, we come back and make it right, no paperwork and no arguing. That’s been our standard on every job for 42 years.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s where we’re honest with Castaic homeowners: keypad and intercom work is low-voltage for the most part, but the danger comes from what’s on the other side of the wire. The keypad and intercom both connect into the gate opener’s control board, and if you miswire a connector or pinch a wire in the housing, you can damage the board itself, which is a far more expensive repair than the keypad was in the first place. That four-pin wiring difference I mentioned earlier catches DIYers regularly.

You can safely check the basics: tighten any loose wire connections you can see, clear debris from the keypad face, and make sure the post mount hasn’t come loose. But if the keypad is on and the gate won’t move, or the intercom is dead in one direction, stop and call us at (350) 248-1180. A live person answers, day or night, and we’ll tell you honestly if it’s something we can walk you through over the phone or something that needs a truck.
