- You can lift the gate leaf and feel vertical play at the hinge. Play at the hinge means the hinge pin or the welded hinge knuckle is worn or the weld itself has cracked. A properly hung gate shouldn’t move more than an eighth of an inch. More than that, and the fabrication needs attention.
