Linear Access Control Installation: The Castaic Owner’s Guide

Linear access control installation in Castaic typically runs between $450 and $1,400 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a failed board, swapping a keypad, or pulling new wire from the house to the gate. We stock Linear-compatible parts on our trucks and complete most access control installs in a single visit. The usual story we hear from Castaic homeowners goes like this: the gate worked fine for fifteen years, then one morning the keypad beeps but the gate won’t budge, or the remote stopped working after a power blink, and now someone has to walk down a hundred feet of driveway in the dark to open the gate by hand.

Call (350) 248-1180

If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place. We service Linear systems throughout Castaic and the surrounding foothills, from the older AE-1000 telephone entry units to the newer linear actuators and receivers still running on thousands of gates across the Santa Clarita Valley.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear access control covers a broad family of equipment: the AP-5 and AE-1000/2000 telephone entry systems, the MDR and MGR multi-door controllers, the DXS and EXS radio receivers, and the MegaCode series of remotes and keypads that pair with them. The single biggest compatibility gotcha we see in Castaic is mismatched radio frequencies. Older Linear systems run on 318 MHz, while newer MegaCode units moved to 300 MHz, and they will not talk to each other. If you buy a replacement keypad online without checking the frequency printed on the back of your existing receiver, you’ll have a brand new part that does nothing.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Linear was acquired by Nortek Control, and genuine OEM boards and keypads are still available, but lead times run long and prices have climbed. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist for common parts like keypad membranes, antennas, and some receiver boards. We’re happy to install either, but we’ll tell you honestly which one makes sense for your model. On a twenty-year-old AE-1000 that’s already had one board replaced, a $90 aftermarket keypad may be the smarter money than a $300 OEM unit with a six-week backorder.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear or Nortek. What that means for you is we fix what’s actually wrong, whether that’s a $40 relay or a $600 board, instead of steering you toward a whole new system because it’s easier for us.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t open. The keypad is sending a signal, which means the radio path is alive, but the relay on the receiver board isn’t closing or the gate operator’s input has failed. In Castaic’s summer heat, we see solder joints on older Linear boards crack from years of thermal cycling.
  • Remote works from ten feet but not from the street. The receiver antenna has corroded, been knocked loose, or the receiver itself is losing sensitivity. Castaic’s dry climate slows corrosion, but it doesn’t stop it, especially on antennas exposed to full sun year-round.
  • The gate opens on its own at night. This is almost always a failing relay on the Linear receiver or a short in the buried loop detector wire. It’s also a security problem you shouldn’t leave until morning. We answer calls around the clock at (350) 248-1180.
  • Telephone entry system auto-dials but no one can hear you. On AE-series units, the voice chip or the phone line coupler has gone. Ten years of Castaic temperature swings from low 30s in winter to over 100 in summer is hard on those boards.
  • Power blink killed the gate and it won’t reset. Linear boards are sensitive to voltage spikes. The MOV surge protection on older units is sacrificial, meaning it died doing its job, but the board may have taken a hit too. A trained tech needs to test the power supply before swapping parts.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Linear access control installation costs in Castaic, broken down by the work involved:

  • Keypad or radio receiver replacement: $450-$700 installed. Includes the part, mounting or rewiring, programming to your existing remotes, and testing at the gate and from the street.
  • Telephone entry system (AE-series) board replacement: $600-$950 installed. Includes the board, voice chip if needed, and reprogramming all tenant or family codes.
  • Full access control replacement with new keypad, receiver, and two remotes: $850-$1,400 installed. Includes new weatherproof housing, fresh wiring terminations, and a walkthrough of how to add or delete codes yourself.
  • Full replacement including buried wire run from house to gate: $1,400-$2,200. The trenching and conduit work is what drives this higher. Existing wire that’s still sound keeps you at the lower end.

Every price we quote is settled before we turn a single screw. You’ll know the parts cost, the labor, and the total before we begin, and that number doesn’t change unless we find something buried that genuinely changes the scope, which we’ll stop and tell you about first. Every Linear access control installation we complete carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.

Active offers that apply to this work: $50 off any repair over $250, a free second opinion on any written estimate, and a 5% senior and veteran discount on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable with a multimeter and low-voltage wiring, there are a few things you can safely check: confirm the transformer at the house is putting out 16 to 24 VAC, verify the keypad faceplate isn’t cracked and letting rain in, and check that no gate hinges are binding so hard the operator is tripping its force sensor. Those are diagnostic steps, and they’ll save you a service call if the real issue is a $20 transformer.

What we’d caution you against is opening a Linear control board and swapping components yourself. The boards carry live 120V on the transformer side, the relays are soldered to the PCB, and one wrong jumper setting can send 24V through a 12V circuit and fry a board you were trying to save. We’ve been called to more than one Castaic driveway where a well-meaning DIY attempt turned a $500 repair into a $1,500 replacement. If you’re not certain, call (350) 248-1180 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a service call, and we won’t charge you for that conversation.
